Turkey Visa for Hong Kong Citizens

Hong Kong passport holders do not need a visa for Turkey — up to 90 days in any 180-day period, no fee. But it depends on which document you travel on. Here is how it works.

Turkey has become an easy favourite from Hong Kong — the mosques and bazaars of Istanbul, the balloons over Cappadocia, the ruins at Ephesus and the white terraces of Pamukkale all fit comfortably into one trip. So the first question before booking is the usual one: do Hong Kong citizens need a visa for Turkey? The short answer is no — holders of an HKSAR passport are visa exempt for stays of up to 90 days.

This guide explains, in plain language, which Hong Kong travel documents are exempt and which are not, how long you can stay, whether you need to touch the e-Visa portal at all, what it costs and what happens when you land. It is written for ordinary (tourist) passport holders travelling for tourism or short business.

Because visa policy is set by the Turkish government and can change — exempt lists included — treat everything below as guidance and confirm the current requirements on the official portal before you apply or travel.

Visa rules can change — always confirm current requirements on the official Republic of Türkiye e-Visa site (evisa.gov.tr) before travel. Fees and conditions below are approximate guidance, not a guarantee.

Do Hong Kong citizens need a visa for Turkey?

No — if you hold a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport. Turkey treats HKSAR passport holders as visa exempt for tourism, so there is nothing to apply for, nothing to pay and no visa-on-arrival queue: you simply present your passport at immigration. The exemption is for visits rather than work, study or residence. Other Hong Kong travel documents are treated differently, which is the next section.

Which travel document are you using? HKSAR, BN(O) and D.I.

This is the part that catches travellers out, because Hong Kong issues more than one travel document and Turkey treats them differently. An HKSAR passport is visa exempt for 90 days within 180. A British National (Overseas) — BN(O) — passport is not: BN(O) holders fall outside the exemption and generally need an e-Visa, issued as a three-month multiple-entry permit with no supporting-visa requirement attached. A holder of a Document of Identity for Visa Purposes (D.I.) cannot use the e-Visa at all and must apply at a Turkish embassy or consulate. If your party is travelling on mixed documents, check each one separately — and always confirm which document you will actually travel on before you book.

How long can Hong Kong citizens stay in Turkey without a visa?

On an HKSAR passport, up to 90 days within any 180-day period. That is a rolling allowance rather than a per-trip one: on arrival the officer looks back over the previous 180 days and counts the days you have already spent in Turkey, so several short visits draw from the same budget. Days generally run from the date of entry to the date of exit. If you are planning a week in Istanbul now and a fortnight on the coast later, keep a note of your dates — overstaying can mean fines and trouble re-entering. Longer stays, work or study need a separate visa or residence permit.

Do you need the e-Visa portal (evisa.gov.tr)?

On an HKSAR passport there is nothing to buy at evisa.gov.tr — but the portal is still worth two minutes. Its eligibility checker lets you select Hong Kong and your document type and confirm, officially, whether a visa is required for your trip and how long you may stay. It is also where a BN(O) holder applies. Ignore third-party "visa" websites offering to sell Hong Kong travellers a Turkey visa or a "travel authorisation" — on an HKSAR passport there is nothing to sell, and for everyone else the government site is the only official source.

Cost & validity

On an HKSAR passport there is no fee. There is nothing to pay for entry itself and no visa document with an expiry date to track — what governs your trip is the 90-days-in-180 allowance and the validity of your passport. BN(O) holders do pay the e-Visa fee, and the amount is shown only in the apply flow at evisa.gov.tr when you apply, so take the figure from the portal itself rather than from any other site.

Documents needed

On an HKSAR passport there is no visa paperwork, but travel prepared: a passport with enough validity left for your trip; a return or onward ticket; proof of accommodation; and sufficient funds. Officers may ask to see any of these, so keep your hotel booking and itinerary to hand. BN(O) holders should add their approved e-Visa PDF, printed or on the phone. Passport-validity rules are worth checking on the official portal or with your airline before you fly.

At the airport

On arrival in Turkey, join the passport control queue and present your Hong Kong passport — on an HKSAR document there is no visa to show and no counter to pay at. Officers may ask about your hotel, your length of stay and your return flight; routine questions, quickly answered. Make sure you get an entry stamp: it is what starts the clock on your 90 days.

Apply on the official portal

The only official place to apply is the Republic of Türkiye e-Visa portal. Avoid third-party sites that charge inflated fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hong Kong citizens need a visa for Turkey in 2026?

No, not on an HKSAR passport. Hong Kong SAR passport holders are visa exempt and can enter Turkey for tourism without a visa or an e-Visa, for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. British National (Overseas) passport holders are not exempt and need an e-Visa. Visa policy can change, so confirm your status on evisa.gov.tr before you book.

How long can Hong Kong passport holders stay in Turkey?

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period on an HKSAR passport. It is a rolling allowance, so days from earlier trips inside the same 180-day window count towards the total. Track your dates if you are making more than one visit — overstaying can mean fines and problems on re-entry. Confirm the current limit on evisa.gov.tr.

Do BN(O) passport holders need a visa for Turkey?

Yes. The Hong Kong exemption does not extend to British National (Overseas) passports. BN(O) holders generally need an e-Visa, issued as a three-month multiple-entry permit with no supporting-visa condition attached. Apply on evisa.gov.tr and confirm the current rule there before you travel.

How much does a Turkey visa cost for Hong Kong citizens?

Nothing on an HKSAR passport — you are exempt, so there is no fee and nothing to buy in advance. BN(O) holders pay the e-Visa fee, which is shown in the apply flow on evisa.gov.tr. Treat any figure quoted elsewhere as approximate and confirm it on the portal before paying.

Is there visa on arrival in Turkey for Hong Kong passport holders?

There is nothing to buy on arrival on an HKSAR passport, because no visa is required at all — go straight to passport control. BN(O) holders should have their e-Visa before they fly. Confirm your status on evisa.gov.tr.

Can I travel to Turkey on a Document of Identity (D.I.)?

Not on the e-Visa. Holders of a Document of Identity for Visa Purposes must apply for a visa at a Turkish embassy or consulate rather than online, so allow extra time and contact the mission well before your trip.

Which website is the official one for Turkey visa information?

Only evisa.gov.tr, the Republic of Türkiye government portal, is official. Third-party sites look similar and charge fees for documents you may not even need. Check there first.
