Fethiye Travel Guide
How to plan a trip to Fethiye — the gateway to Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, famous for the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz, blue-cruise gulets and paragliding over the sea.
Fethiye is a relaxed harbour town on Turkey’s south-western Turquoise Coast, set around a wide bay scattered with pine-covered islands. It is the natural base for one of the country’s most beautiful stretches of shoreline, the ancient region of Lycia, where turquoise water meets mountains and the ruins of a lost civilisation sit half-hidden in the hills.
Just over the headland lies Ölüdeniz, with its iconic Blue Lagoon and Belcekız beach — and the launch site for tandem paragliding flights that drift down 2,000 metres from Babadağ mountain. The town itself is unpretentious and friendly, with a working marina, a lively fish market where restaurants cook your choice of catch, and easy boat trips out to the bays and the Twelve Islands.
This guide covers the best things to do, when to come, how to reach the coast via Dalaman Airport, and where to base yourself between Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and the quieter villages beyond.
Top things to do in Fethiye
See the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz and relax on Belcekız beach, then try tandem paragliding off Babadağ for the view of a lifetime. Take a boat trip around the Twelve Islands or a longer blue cruise on a traditional gulet. Walk part of the Lycian Way, hike the dramatic Saklıkent Gorge, and visit the ghost village of Kayaköy and the Lycian rock tombs above Fethiye. In town, browse the fish market and the old bazaar, and watch the sunset from a harbour-front café.
When to visit Fethiye
The season runs from late April to October. May–June and September–October are ideal: warm and sunny, the sea is swimmable, and it is calmer and cheaper than the July–August peak. High summer is hot and busy but perfect for beach and boat days, with the most reliable paragliding conditions. Winter is mild and green but quiet, with many tourist businesses closed.
How to get to Fethiye
The nearest airport is Dalaman (DLM), about 50 km away, with seasonal direct flights from Europe and connections via Istanbul. A transfer from Dalaman to Fethiye or Ölüdeniz takes around 60–90 minutes. The slightly farther Antalya Airport (AYT) is an alternative if combining with the eastern Riviera. Fethiye also links by road and gulet cruise to Kaş, Kalkan and the wider Lycian coast.
Where to stay in Fethiye
Fethiye town and the nearby Çalış Beach suit those who want a real town, a marina and good value. Ölüdeniz is the place for the lagoon, beach life and paragliding, busier and more resort-like in summer. For something quieter and more upscale, the small towns of Kalkan and Kaş further east offer boutique hotels, harbour restaurants and a more intimate Lycian-coast feel.
