Izmir - of which the oldest name is Smyrna - was refounded by Alexander the Great in Mt Pagos (Kadifekale today). See the ancient artifacts like marble statues, busts, portraits and masks housed in Archeology Museum taken from neighboring ancient sites such as Ephesus, Pergamon, Miletus, Aphrodisias, Clazomenae, Teos, Iasos. Historical Elevator was built by a Jewish businessman, Nesim Levi, in 1907. Today it is a must-see before you leave Izmir. Visit the Kemeralti, a historical bazaar first founded under the reign of Ottomans in the 16th century. Experience the local way of shopping with thousands of local shops selling traditional handcrafts, ceramics, textile products, leather clothes, gold and silver jewelry, shoes, and spices. Izmir has a more European feel than other Turkish cities, with many bars, cafes, and restaurants dotting the waterfront called Kordon where you can enjoy the soothing view of Aegean Sea by having a cup of coffee.
